In short

Sheldon evolves at level 39 once you've beaten the Young Omega Sherro. To reach that fight, you take the Shell Sword from the Aged Omega Sherro in the main quest Ancient Sacred Fragrance, then finish the side quest Stars and the Knight at Echoback Landing. The evolution also takes Wave Stones, one or three depending on the source.

Carry three and the count won't matter. The Alpha Panpanta on the shore north of the Echoback Landing Bloom drops them. We'll read the number off the evolution screen in our own game and update this page.

Get a Sheldon to level 39 and it still won’t evolve. The evolution has a condition, which six guides give as “Defeat the Omega Sherro,” and the game has two Omega Sherros. The one you meet first, in the main quest, is the Aged Omega Sherro, and beating it doesn’t count. The one that counts is the Young Omega Sherro, and it turns up only after a side quest you can’t finish without the sword the first one drops.

So the route goes through both fights. You play the main quest “Ancient Sacred Fragrance” as far as the Shell Sword, carry the sword into the side quest “Stars and the Knight,” beat the Young Omega Sherro, and evolve Sheldon with Wave Stones in your bag. The two fights, the side quest, and the Wave Stones are all at Echoback Landing. If the Sherro doesn’t have to be a Sheldon you raised, there’s a way around the quests, through an egg box, near the end of this page.

Can You Catch a Sherro?

Not in its Basic Form. The official wiki gives the Basic Form no habitat, and it doesn’t appear in the open world. The only Sherro you can catch is the Thunderstorm Form, which is both Water and Electric, and the wiki places it at Echoback Landing.

Any other Sherro comes from evolution. The official wiki lists it as number 055, a Nova Stage Water creature with the DPS role and 509 total stats. The line has no branches. Shelly, number 053, becomes Sheldon, number 054, at level 29 with no other condition, and both of them live at Echoback Landing. Sheldon becomes Sherro at level 39, and that last step comes with a condition.

The Route in Four Steps

The order matters, because each step hands you what the next one needs. You can’t finish the side quest without the sword, the boss shows up only after the side quest, and only the boss lets Sheldon evolve.

  1. Play the main quest “Ancient Sacred Fragrance” until the Aged Omega Sherro drops the Shell Sword.
  2. Finish the side quest “Stars and the Knight” at Echoback Landing, which can’t be done without the sword.
  3. Beat the Young Omega Sherro, by day, on the island northwest of the Beachside Sandbars Bloom.
  4. Evolve Sheldon at level 39 with the Wave Stones, one or three depending on the source.

Step 1: The Shell Sword From Ancient Sacred Fragrance

“Ancient Sacred Fragrance” stays closed until you meet three conditions. You need to have finished the chapter 2 missions of Elite Training, reached level 35, and earned the rank of Student III, which comes from the growth mission “Promotion: Legacy’s Protection.”

The quest starts when you talk to Velouria. At the entrance to the Mistwoods you meet Sunia and Nicole, beat a Tuckin to get the Super Truffle, and bring it back to Sunia. From there the quest takes you to Echoback Landing and the Aged Omega Sherro. One guide calls it the Elder Omega Sherro and some databases the Elderly Omega Sherro, but it’s the same fight. Go in at around level 40. One guide says it only comes out at night, and we haven’t checked that yet.

Beating it gets you the Shell Sword, and for Sherro that’s all it does. Sheldon still can’t evolve afterward, and the sources that cover this point agree on it. It’s an easy place to stop by mistake, since the condition names an Omega Sherro and this is the first one you meet.

The main quest goes on after the sword, and the next stretch asks for more. It wants chapter 4 of Elite Training, level 45, promotion to Wayfarer II, and a “Warrior” mission in the Russet Highlands. That’s a different mission from the “Warrior” at Beast Fang Ridge that leads to Inferlupa.

For Sherro you may not need any of that. The guides list the Shell Sword as the only requirement for the side quest, not the end of the main quest. Our reading is that you can stop the main quest here and move on, but we haven’t tested whether leaving it halfway blocks anything later.

Step 2: Stars and the Knight

“Stars and the Knight” is a side quest at Echoback Landing, and you can’t complete it without the Shell Sword. It starts on the island to the north, where three Susuta are waiting.

The quest runs on disguises. You’ll need two Aniimo to twine with, one from Susuta’s family and one from Shelly’s, and which one you need depends on the conversation at each point. If you’re missing either, catch it before you go.

The steps come in a fixed order. Twined with a Susuta, dig up three Shining Shells on the shore, and one of them turns out to be the Sparkly Shelly. Then twine with a Shelly, talk to her, and follow her on her patrol. Next, wake a Sleeping Shelly with the shockwave from Shelly’s ground slam (Damage Boost).

After that, chase off three Susuta to get the Susuta Shovel. One guide adds a Popota to the group you have to drive away. Hand the Shell Sword to the Sparkly Shelly, and finish by bringing the shovel back to the Susuta.

Step 3: The Young Omega Sherro

The Young Omega Sherro appears once “Stars and the Knight” is done. Look on the island northwest of the Beachside Sandbars Bloom, at Echoback Landing, during the day. If it isn’t there, switch the in-game time to day and come back.

It’s level 40. Two databases put the area at levels 38 to 39, but that number describes the area, not the boss. It’s a Water type, weak to Grass, Electric, and Ice, so bring Aniimo of those elements. You can’t catch it.

Two of its habits are worth knowing before you go in. When it raises its sword, it’s charging, and that’s your window to break its guard with a BREAK. If the charge goes through, its attacks reach farther and hit harder. Watch for a Shelly, too. She gives the Young Omega Sherro a shield that sends your attacks back, so take her out first.

Beat it, and Sheldon can evolve. You can also fight it again after the first win, and the rematches come with rewards of their own.

Sources don’t agree on where the duel sits. Four pages on three sites make it the end of “Stars and the Knight.” Two step-by-step walkthroughs of the quest stop without it, and one guide describes it as a fight you go looking for on the island after the quest is over. Both readings can hold at once, a story duel that closes the quest and a boss that stays on the island afterward.

One guide also says the Young Omega Sherro gives you an Alpha Sherro egg before the duel. It’s the only source that mentions this, so treat it as a lead to check, not a promise.

Step 4: Wave Stones and the Evolution

With the Young Omega Sherro beaten, Sheldon evolves at level 39 as long as you have the Wave Stones. How many does it take? That’s still open. Three guides say one and two say three, and of those two, one was updated on October 2 and the other uses data from the beta.

Bring three to be safe. The Alpha Panpanta drops them, on the shore north of the Echoback Landing Bloom, so you can pick them up in the same region as everything else on this route. Once we’ve counted them on the evolution screen ourselves, we’ll put the number here.

Skipping the Quests With an Egg

There’s a way around all of this if the Sherro doesn’t have to be one you raised. After ten Elite Training missions you receive the Custom Egg Box - DPS, which some sources call the Custom Box - DPS. It lets you choose one of three eggs, Thornblade, Scorchhowl, or Sherro, and the Sherro that hatches has Perfect potential.

The price is the choice itself. Since you pick one egg out of three, taking Sherro means giving up Thornblade and Scorchhowl, so it’s worth thinking about which of the three your team is missing before you open the box.

What the Patches Changed

Nothing on the route. The official patch notes of September 29 (1.0.3616231.0) and September 30 (v1.0.3629693.0) mention Sherro only for a fix to some blurry textures on its model, a fix that also covers Grizbo and Luminelle. The Dev Dispatch Vol. 1 of October 1 doesn’t mention it at all. None of the three touches Shelly, Sheldon, the two quests, the Omega Sherros, or the Wave Stones.

We checked that on October 3 in two ways, by reading every announcement since September 21 in full and by searching all of them for the names. Steam also lists a new public build from October 1, number 25647255, which came out with no patch notes, so this page follows 1.0.3629693, the last version with official notes.

What We Haven’t Tested Yet

Five questions on this page can’t be settled by reading more sources, only by playing. In our own game, we’ll count the Wave Stones on the evolution screen and see whether the Young Omega Sherro closes “Stars and the Knight” or waits on the island afterward. We’ll also look for the Alpha Sherro egg before the duel, check whether the Aged Omega Sherro only comes out at night, and find out whether you can leave the main quest after the Shell Sword without blocking the side quest.

None of the five would change the order of the four steps above. At most they change how much of the main quest you play, when you go looking for the first Omega Sherro, and how many stones you carry.
